 2007 Training Programs

On the 2nd of December 2007 the seventh training program for the newly appointed diplomatic attachés began. In accordance with Article 18 of the Jordanian Statute of Diplomatic Corps, the duration of this mandatory training is one year.
The program includes 750 training hours that will cover three complementary aspects of diplomacy: theory, practice and culture. All sessions are designed to provide a cross section of related material that meets the requirements of contemporary diplomacy. The training aims at expanding the diplomats' knowledge of essential subjects and enhancing their skills to the level where they may perform as distinguished diplomats.

Conferences

The Regional Center on Conflict Prevention of the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy with the cooperation of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation organized International Conference : “Global Common Challenges and Regional Trends – the Arab World in Times of Change” held in Amman on 3rd and 4th November 2007.(Remarks by the President)

The “NATO Objectives and Policies in the Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue Countries and the Greater Middle East”.  The conference was organized in cooperation with the Regional Center on Conflict Prevention and the NATO Public Policy Administration.  A group of academics and decision makers from NATO, Egypt, France, Algeria, UK, Morocco, Tunisia, and Jordan exchanged views on the means to enhance and improve the role of NATO in the Mediterranean region.

"Security and Cooperation in the Middle East and North Africa” Conference.  This conference was organized in the framework of the Canadian-Danish initiative in cooperation with the Regional Center on Conflict Prevention.  The conference brought a group of international security and cooperation experts from government and civil society organizations to create a methodology for security and cooperation in the region.  A number of experts took part from Algeria, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Belgium, Britain, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Bahrain.  
   
 
Seminars
UN Peacekeeping Doctrine". This Roundtable was organized under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Marouf Al Bakhit , Prime Minister of Jordan in the period (5-6/9/2007) in cooperation with UN Peacekeeping Department Operations, Folke Bernadotte Academy and Person Peace Keeping Center. The Roundtable brought experts from  Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Jordan. (Keynote Remarks by the Prime Minister)

In the context of the New Diplomatic Attachés Program, 6th group, the following seminars were held:

Jordanian National Security and the Role of Foreign Policy, in cooperation with the Royal Jordanian National Defense College on 16/5/2007.

 Interfaith Cultural Dialogue on 1/5/2007

“International Humanitarian Law,” which was organized in cooperation with the International Committee for the Red Cross in Amman on 14/2/2007

In addition, the following seminars were held:

“In search of Peace: Conflict Approaches”.  The seminar was organized in cooperation with the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (national school for administration of France) and support from the French Diplomatic mission in Amman, in the period 26/2 – 28/2/2007.  37 Participants from various government organizations took part.

Anti Corruption Seminar. This seminar was held over two days (19-20/6/2006) in cooperation with France’s Service Central de Prévention de la Corruption (SCPC) -- central service for the prevention of corruption -- and with the support of the French Diplomatic mission in Amman. 31 Participants from different government organizations concerned took part in the seminar, in which a number of working papers were presented by French experts from the SCPC and from the French Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Interior.  A paper was also presented by His Excellency Dr. Muhyiddine Touq, former JID president and Chairman of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNDOC) Committee.

Regional Seminar on Public Service and Human Resources.  The three-day (11-13/6/2006) seminar was held at the JID in cooperation with the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA) and with support from the French Embassy in Amman.  15 civil servants took part from Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and the Sultanate of Oman. A number of working papers were presented by French experts and other participants.

The Role of Civil Society Institutions in Building and Consolidating the Culture of Human Rights.  This seminar was organized on 23/5/2006 in cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Center for Human Rights, and the JID.  This was the first meeting of its kind between Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of civil society institutions and NGOs to explore means of cooperation between institutions of the State and civil society in enhancing human rights in Jordan.  The Morning session explored the establishment of the theoretical framework for the role of civil society in supporting human rights in Jordan, while the evening session explored the vision of civil society of its role in promoting and protecting human rights, including practical applications and obstacles.  His Excellency the Minster of Foreign Affairs attended the opening and closing sessions.

The JID also hosted a number of thinkers, politicians, and journalists from Jordan and abroad to give the following lectures:

    Dr. Toby Dodge, Counselor/ Director of the Gulf Countries Program of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) of the UK gave a lecture entitled: “Is the U.S. Already Defeated in Iraq? The Causes and Consequences” on 30/10/2006.  The lecture was attended by a number of intellectuals, politicians, and participants in the JID’s New Diplomatic Attachés Program.

    In the presence of Her Highness Princess Muna Al-Hussein, and a number of spouses of Arab and foreign diplomats accredited in Jordan, and in cooperation with the Cultural Committee for Wives of Diplomats, Dr. Khaled Abou Rumman and Dr. Ismail Bilbeisi from the Ministry of Health gave a lecture on avian flu on 8/2/2006.

“Factors Affecting Women in Jordan: Religion, the Government, Society,” Karen Shihab, Visiting Researcher, the Royal Center for Interfaith Studies.

“Iraq: An Empire in Denial,” Daren Atkinson, Visiting Researcher, Regional Center for Humanitarian Peace/ Higher Council for Science and Technology, Amman, 14/5/2007.

“The Arab Israeli Conflict: Israeli-Syrian Negotiations,” Dr. Peter Harling, Political Analyst, the International Crisis Group, Damascus, 2/5/2007.

Miscellaneous

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Regional Center on Conflict Prevention and the Conflict Studies Research Center of the Defense Academy of the United Kingdom entitled: “Advanced Research and Strategic Studies to Support Conflict Prevention.”

 
Workshops

A specialized Workshop on Ratifying International Legal instruments on the Fight against Terror. This workshop was organized at the JID over three days (21-23/5/2006) in cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna.  21 legal experts from different government organizations took part in the seminar, which discussed Jordanian anti-terror laws.  Participants recommended taking the necessary measures to ratify a number of instruments to make them compatible with the UN anti-terror protocols.

The JID, in cooperation with the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures based in Alexandria, organized two workshops in Amman in the period 23-29/6/2007 on:

“The Importance of Linguistic Diversity for Cultures”, 23-25/6/2007.

Using New Educational Tools on Religious Diversity during Studies”, 27-29/6/2007.

The two workshops included teachers and experts from a number of European and Arab Countries, and a number of teachers from Jordanian schools.

A training workshop on projects and the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, how to submit projects and receive assistance, 22-23/1/2007.

The JID, in cooperation with the United Nations Peacekeeping Department and with support from the Pearson Peacekeeping Center of Canada and the Folke Bernadotte Academy of Sweden, works to organize a workshop on “The Principles of peacekeeping” in the period 5-6/9/2007, with high level participation from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Jordan.
